narrative, mary l. sawyer, attorney.
I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK of the 'youngsters' that have all come to town. I have been born and raised in San Francisco, and I'm deeply protective of this city. I'm only in my mid-forties, but I'm still concerned about the wave of kids that have moved in recently. Some of them have big ideas that can change the future, and others are just tearing the city down. I'm prepared to do whatever it takes to keep the peace, and I know that my generation and I won't go down without a fight.
narrative, maika n. hewitt, high school senior.
THERE ARE SOME TIMES YOU CAN WAKE UP IN THE MORNING, and have a thought strike you that you normally wouldn't stumble across at any other point in your day. I've done that before. I've woken up and realized 'hey, we are the new generation.' It's not exactly a dream thought to have or anything, but i guess I've never been stereotypical anything. I'm just a boy raised in Boston, who moved to New Jersey and met a girl. A girl that changed my whole life around. And then, another move. Clear across the plains, the valleys, the mountains, ending up in San Fransisco. I wasn't sure I'd make it, but with being in that new generation comes new abilities. I've found the one it takes to survive and now, i just hope it lasts.
narrative, john t. pickens, retired general.
IT'S NOT LIKE I GOT MUCH REST BEFORE THE KIDS, and I'm not getting much rest now. All these new folks are flooding into my city, changing the way everything works. They have their big flashy cars and their new gadgets and cell phones, and I don't even care anymore. I know I can be that withered old grandfather that yells "NO TRESPASSING,", but I do it with pride. If I shake my cane at you, I do it with the wisdom that comes with my age. I just get real crabby like when I see all them young folk runnin' around like they think they know everything. I'm scared to let our generation slip away, but I know we're fading fast. I just pray that they don't get themselves into a bigger mess. They look like a rowdy bunch of uppity teenagers, and I don't like them teenagers.
narrative, frederick m. clarke, high school senior.
DROWNING DOESN'T EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE IT, because where I am, there isn't any hope of being rescued. For the record, I'd like to send out a big "FUCK YOU" to everyone who's ever tried to care. I don't want your apologies, I don't want your 'best wishes' and your stupid pitying eyes. You don't know who you're messing with. I'll hit you so hard and so fast, you'll be knocked out on the ground before you can even blink. I'm not going down without a fight, and I'm hellbent on causing the biggest damn scene you've ever come across. I guess I'm kind of tired and I'm keeping my secrets, but everyone has their skeletons. We hopped around in New Jersey before making the biggest move here, to San Francisco California. I'm looking for a new start so I can leave all that shit behind, and cause some new trouble.
narrative, athena h. williams, adult.
IT'S ALWAYS BEEN HARD, going from one place to another. No one's ever really unscathed when they pack up and move across the country, but doing it twice in a year? It's more than just a bumpy road to travel along. Everyone has their problems and needs their fresh starts, whether they're running from the past or toward the future but in the end, all anyone's looking for is a fresh start, another chance. I guess I have every right to be included in that because even surrounded by my friends, I can't help but want to get away."
Everyone wants to go where the sun shines all the time. People dream about a better tomorrow, but who's going to bring that day? The older generations are finally stepping down, realizing that the new wave of teenagers and young adults have reached their time. Powers are starting to shift, relationships change, and through it all, bonds are formed and broken. The youngsters laugh and scoff at the older ones, but they should be careful; the seniors and the middle-aged know more and see more than they do. In the heat of youth, rash decisions are made and then the consequences inescapably linger.
Trends come and go. Music changes, people leave your life and people come into it. Whether you like it or not, everything transforms in your life and it's up to you to make the most of what you have. Nothing is stagnant, even in such a picturesque setting - the times are changing quickly. New technology, new ways of living.. everything is bigger, better, faster, stronger, newer. Some people struggle to hold on to the things of the past, but it's better to let go and move on. Throw out your old records, put on some shoes, and go dancing.
Welcome to San Francisco, the most beautiful and scenic city in California. As we like to say, the old is out and
