Firefly takes place in a rundown city located in AU North America that is dominated by a once famous carnival, known worldwide mainly for it's shocking sideshow. It drew crowds at all times of the year and was always packed from opening to closing.
Due to the popularity of the carnival, a city was built around it, mainly consisting of homes for the performers and hotels for the guests. The city depended completely upon the carnival, so when the times began to change and people lost interest in it, they lost interest in the dying city, too.
The preformers who had not moved on into a more prosperous future remained in the city, occasionally putting on a show or two for the few that still came out to see the carnival. They were few and far between, and many of the prospective visitors had second thoughts and fled once they saw the disasterous state of their destination.
The city was without any sort of elected authority which ulitimately led to it's residents to become violent and unlawful. Those who enjoy such lifestyles are drawn to the city by rumours, which somehow surpass the ears and eyes of the law, so that they are free to do what they please.
